Immersive multimedia display integrated by KA into the architecture of Eaton Center

by Craig Wasserman27. January 2015 16:47

KA worked in conjunction with Ralph Appelbaum Associates, Alexander Design, and Zenith Systems to provide an environment that is all encompassing in its description of Eaton. In close collaboration with Pickard Chilton, Eaton, and The Richard E. Jacobs Group, KA developed an architectural setting that embodies and supports the lighting, sound, kinetic, and interactive displays that showcase the Eaton story.

Some of the major components of this multimedia display are a 53-foot high LED pendant kinetic display; touch tables which provide hands-on learning and real-time information; an 80-foot long computerized LED exhibit screen that also serves as a security element; and an audio system which provides tonal background in conjunction with ever-changing LED images.

While the visual and aural impact of the design is dramatic, what is not obvious is the architectural and system design that allows for these exhibits to be easily maintained and updated. KA was responsible for the technical development of the architectural elements, the seamless integration of the display components in the architecture, and the coordination of all consultants. KA served as Executive Architect on this project.

KA and RTKL Take Home the Gold for Fashion Outlets of Chicago

by Craig Wasserman5. December 2014 11:19

Congratulations to the Fashion Outlets of Chicago team for their recognition at the 2014 ICSC U.S. Design and Development Awards! The project won the Gold award in the New Developments category. With the grand opening taking place in August 2013, KA served as executive architect, and partnered with RTKL Associates Inc. as the design architect team.

Excerpt from the award submission: As the Chicago area’s first ground-up enclosed mall in more than a decade, the Fashion Outlets of Chicago breaks the mold of the traditional shopping center. Located across the street from O’Hare International Airport and just 20 minutes from downtown Chicago, the 733,000-square-foot center features high-end amenities throughout. It fuses fashion and art in an original and significant way, its design incorporating nationally and internationally commissioned artwork that enriches and enlivens its unique ambiance. Its stellar 150-store tenant roster includes such names as Gucci, Prada, Barneys, Diane Von Furstenburg, and Moncler.

Winners of the ICSC United States Design and Development Shopping Center Awards were announced on December 4 at the ICSC CenterBuild Conference in Phoenix. The ICSC United States Design and Development Shopping Center Awards honor outstanding achievement in design/development of retail properties and retail store design.

KA teams with Simon and Saks for Houston Galleria redevelopment

by Craig Wasserman8. September 2014 10:40

Part of a larger multi-million dollar renovation and new construction, KA is providing architectural services for the redevelopment of Houston’s glittering Galleria. Working with Simon Property Group, Saks Fifth Avenue, and a team of designers, KA is helping to convert a former Saks store into a two-level, 110,000 sf mall wing which will add 35 new luxury retailers and restaurants, as well as connect the new Saks store to the existing mall.

In turn, Saks will move to a new location - a two-level, 198,000 sf building located adjacent to its existing space. For the first phase of the project, KA is assisting Saks in developing the building shell for its new store, set to open in 2016. Construction will begin on the second phase of the project – the new mall wing – after Saks moves to its new building.

Employee Events

by Craig Wasserman7. April 2014 09:20

Aside from our day-to-day activities of serving our clients, the ka staff knows how to have a little fun. Throughout the year, we partake in office-wide traditions hosted by our Board of Directors. Below are some of the highlights from this quarter.

March Madness - Each year, the ka staff gathers at a local gym before work to participate in some hoops action, accompanied by a company-wide breakfast and team selections for the firm’s NCAA tournament bracket. While it’s safe to say our staff will not be foraying into the basketball profession anytime soon, the entertaining displays of basketball prowess and spirit of competition fuel a morning of camaraderie.

CANstruction - Five associates at ka were selected to represent the firm at the 2014 CANstruction, a design and build competition benefitting the local food bank. Charged with a theme of “Route 66: American Landmarks,” the ka team designed a structure comprised of 2,100 cans that represented a Cadillac driving down the iconic Route 66 highway. In addition to making a donation valued at $2,500, ka also took home the award for “Best Meal,” recognizing the team which used the most nutritious can donations.

ka Putt-Putt Challenge - Equipped with a golf putter made of a sample block, ruler and drafting tape, ka’s staff participated in the annual in-house putting challenge. Conditions were fair this year, with just a light (air conditioned) breeze on the “greens” of our carpeted hallways as golf balls were maneuvered around the conference table, under the staircase and toward the cup.

KA congratulates David H. Bader on his semi-retirement

by Craig Wasserman12. December 2013 06:00

With more than 41 total years of experience in his career and after 24 years of service at KA Architecture, we are sad to announce that David H. Bader has stepped down from his position on the Board of Directors and as the Director of Landscape Architecture for his semi-retirement.

David joined Keeva J. Kekst Architects in 1989 as the head of the firm’s “First Look Department.”  With a focus on initial site planning and building area studies, David became an invaluable part of the development process for KA’s clients. Within a matter of days or even hours, David’s group could provide valuable information to the client regarding the ability to develop a potential parcel of land, before they had to secure it. David later became a shareholder of the company and in 1991, David was selected to serve on the Board of Directors, a position he held until his retirement. David spent his career imparting his knowledge and wisdom to the KA staff. David will continue his working relationship with KA as a consultant to the firm.

Congratulations David from the staff at KA Architecture!
