Horseshoe Casino Cleveland | Executive Architect (Horseshoe Casino Cleveland) | Executive & Design Architect (Collection Auto Group Centre)
Occupying four floors of the historic 13-story Higbee Building in downtown Cleveland, the 300,000 sf Horseshoe Casino Cleveland features 96,000 square feet of around the clock Las Vegas style gaming action, a World Series of Poker Room, a 400-seat buffet, two bars, a three-outlet food court, back of house functions and an executive office suite for the owner’s business operations.
The design and function of the casino blends the historical nature of the building with the latest technologies and energy efficient practices. The casino utilizes Higbee’s historic exterior building entrances on Public Square and Prospect Avenue. Interior connections to Tower City Center are located on the concourse and first level through the reclaimed historic Higbee entrances. Exterior enhancements along Public Square, Ontario Street and Prospect Avenue respect the historic nature of the original building.
KA faced a multitude of unique challenges with this re-adaptive use of the space. All new systems were required to be fit into the building envelope without intrusion into the existing tenants’ operations, while still honoring the historic nature of the structure. Some historical elements were modified to fit the requirements of newer building codes, and other elements were recreated with innovative energy efficient sources.
Elements of the building’s existing condition were returned to closer alignment with their original intent. Partitions were removed to recreate larger volume spaces, dropped ceilings were returned to their original height, decorative facades on columns and beams were restored and windows were opened up to reinstate the building as a well-lit space. A procession of new crystal chandeliers stretches along the street-level column bay, from the Public Square entry to the Prospect Avenue entry, emulating a similar row of such light fixtures that existed in the former department store.
KA also identified available parking in proximity to the casino, and mapped the access routes to the new attraction. The new Collection Auto Group Centre serves to unify and interconnect the existing environment, and provides convenient a valet and self-parking operation.
A glass-enclosed pedestrian walkway was later added to connect the casino to the Welcome Center. The 175-foot walkway runs diagonally across the intersection of Prospect Ave. and Ontario St., sheltering guests from harsh weather and enabling them to enter the casino without having to cross a busy intersection.
Located in the heart of downtown Cleveland, Horseshoe Cleveland blends into the existing environment as a true urban casino. It is within walking distance of the city’s most luxurious hotels, business and convention facilities, and premiere entertainment districts. This high-profile attraction adds to Cleveland’s array of sports, entertainment, music and cultural destinations. The $350 million development attracted 5 million visitors to the casino in the first year it was open.
